September 29, 2009

AREVA announced today that it will consolidate fuel fabrication operations at its facility located in Richland, Wash. Fuel production operations at the Lynchburg facility on Mount Athos Road will begin transitioning to the Washington facility in spring 2010.

All other products and services including Nuclear Service related activities, the Pump & Motor Service Center and the new Chemistry and Materials Center are not affected by this decision and will continue operations at the Mt. Athos Road facility. Of the more than 300 employees at the Mt. Athos Road facility, approximately 150 will be impacted.

“AREVA is striving to place employees in other positions throughout the organization,” said Britt McKinney, Senior Vice President, U.S. Fuel Sector.

The Mount Athos Road facility has been in operation for 40 years and has produced more than 16,000 fuel assemblies. During those years, the plant has achieved a solid reputation in the nuclear industry for its innovative and state-of-the-art fuel manufacturing process and as a result of the skills, professionalism and dedication of its employees.

The AREVA Richland facility has been successfully manufacturing fuel for the U.S., European and Asian markets for 40 years, with more than 44,000 fuel assemblies produced to date.

“Consolidating fuel production at one location provides for increased operational efficiency and cost savings by streamlining production. AREVA continues to focus on improvement achieved by our commitment to safety, quality, delivery and performance while being responsive to our customers," said McKinney.
