AREVA integrates sustainable development in its operations through the AREVA Way, a continuous improvement process framed by our 10 commitments. Each year AREVA business units assess their performance in order to determine strengths and opportunities. The AREVA Way enables AREVA to incorporate sustainability into everything we do and allows AREVA to benchmark sustainability performance from year to year.

Understanding that electric utility customers are continuously discovering new opportunities to include sustainability in their operations, AREVA is proud to be a partner and support their green supply chain initiatives and targets.

Sustainable Innovation

Cleaning Steam Generators while Minimizing Waste

Reducing waste is an integral element of any sustainability program.  AREVA’s Deposit Minimization Treatment (DMT) is a revolutionary steam generator cleaning and waste minimization innovation that took home an AREVA Sustainable Development Award in 2009.  This unique cleaning service provides cryogenic cleaning of steam generators, avoiding the use of toxic chemicals.  Through this service, cost, critical path time, equipment requirements, liquid waste, space requirements and hazardous waste are all substantially reduced or eliminated.  DMT was also recognized as the basis for a Top Industry Practice Award to Dominion at the 2009 Nuclear Energy Institute sponsored ceremonies in San Francisco.

Dialogue and Consensus Building

Based on our commitment to sustainable development, AREVA seeks to engage in global stakeholder dialogue, the broader goal of which is to develop enduring relationships based on trust in the communities where AREVA operates.  For AREVA, this dialogue is a key element of our commitment to social and environmental responsibility.  At the same time, these opportunities for consensus building allow AREVA to share information about our strategy and operations and receive feedback regarding the concerns and expectations of local and global stakeholders.

• U.S. Stakeholder Sessions
  In alignment with AREVA’s commitment to dialogue and consensus building, in December 2009, AREVA convened 10 stakeholders representing policy think tanks, academia, consumer advocates, unions, and nonprofit organizations for the first-ever AREVA U.S. stakeholder dialogue. 
  
  In October 2010, AREVA hosted its second U.S. stakeholder session, which focused on how AREVA can address political, technological, economic and social challenges in support of the U.S. and global transition to an energy future with less CO₂.
• Local Stakeholder Engagement
  For nearly a decade, AREVA has globally deployed a local stakeholder mapping methodology to guide engagement with the local communities around our major locations. This approach involves identifying the main economic, environmental, social and societal issues for AREVA sites and those in the community.
  
  

Reducing our environmental footprint

For the past six years, AREVA has worked to measure and reduce its environmental footprint in the areas of energy and water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, paper consumption, and conventional waste.  Due to AREVA’s persistence, technological capabilities, and leadership, AREVA has dramatically and effectively reduced its operational environmental footprint.
