COLUMBIA, Md., April 26, 2012 – AREVA Federal Services, LLC is pleased to announce that they will be part of the Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC that was recently awarded a Department of Energy (DOE) contract to manage and operate the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The URS led team will characterize transuranic waste from DOE sites around the country, manage transportation of the waste to the repository, manage receipt and inspection of waste at WIPP and then execute final burial in the 2,150-foot deep geologic repository. The $1.3 billion management and operations contract runs for five years, with an option for an additional five years.
“We are pleased to be a part of this exciting team and look forward to working on this important DOE project,” said Tara Neider, President and CEO, AREVA Federal Services LLC. “The Waste Isolation Pilot Project is a significant project and this is an opportunity to continue to demonstrate how AREVA brings technologies and solutions to the federal government.”
The WIPP site safely disposes the nation’s defense-related transuranic radioactive waste (TRU). TRU waste consists of materials such as equipment, clothing and soils that have been contaminated with radioactive elements that have atomic numbers greater than uranium.
