PEICo and AREVA Selected as Vendor for Off-Site Regional Response for the U.S. Nuclear Industry

Press Release

October 31, 2012

Lynchburg, Va. October 31, 2012 –

The Strategic Alliance for FLEX Emergency Response (SAFER) has been selected by the Nuclear Strategic Issue Advisory Committee (NSAIC) to provide offsite regional response centers for the nuclear industry in the United States. The SAFER team is an alliance between Pooled Equipment Inventory Company (PEICo) and AREVA. PEICo has provided replacement equipment for emergent needs in the nuclear energy industry for more than three decades.

The SAFER Alliance combines PEICo’s existing, off-site Pooled Inventory Management support center and expands it to include AREVA’s industry-leading services such as emergency response planning and mobilization, project management, procurement and outage team expertise. These services originate within the AREVA global Safety Alliance program created in 2011 to assemble products and services to help plants meet ever increasing safety standards, and to ensure resistance to and rapid recovery from major natural hazards.

“PEICo is pleased the SAFER Alliance has been selected for this contract,” said Mark Olson, PEICo president. “This Alliance is the result of PEICo and AREVA, two leaders in the nuclear energy industry, coming together to further enhance the safety and security of our nuclear energy facilities.”

“AREVA is proud to partner on this important project for our industry,” said Michael Rencheck, CEO, AREVA Inc. “As a nuclear leader, AREVA is a strong proponent of the industry’s FLEX program that provides yet another layer of safety and reliability for nuclear energy plant operations.”

The nuclear energy industry in the United States is continually evaluating and updating its safety and security measures at nuclear energy facilities. The nuclear industry developed the FLEX program for adding more back-up systems to cool nuclear reactors and used fuel storage pools and to maintain the integrity of reactor containment structures even in the most unlikely of scenarios. Establishing off-site regional response centers for the nuclear industry is the next step in this program and ensures backup emergency assets will be protected and available for use even in the most unlikely events.
