AREVA Congratulates NGNP Industry Alliance on Award toward HTGR Reactor Technology
February 01, 2013
BETHESDA, Md., Feb. 1, 2013 – AREVA congratulates the NGNP Industry Alliance on its recent contract award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to continue analysis of AREVA’s High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) Generation IV reactor technology.
“The Alliance continues to advance new nuclear energy technologies that are far safer than today’s SMR designs,” stated Mike Rencheck, president and chief executive officer, AREVA Inc. “Its continued partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy means that the technology will be able to more quickly and effectively come to market.”
The NGNP Industry Alliance, a group of member companies many of whom represent the industrial process industry, is dedicated to the development and commercialization of HTGR technologies in order to expand the use of clean, safe nuclear energy for industrial applications while significantly reducing future dependence on fossil fuels. They seek out and promote industrial uses for this technology within the United States, North America and around the world.
This unique group involves utility customers as well as utilities. The HTGR represents an innovative use of technology for process steam beyond the traditional electric generation model. This aspect is a key differentiator for HTGR technology from that of today’s proposed SMR designs; SMR designs typically are for electric generation only, which makes them much less economic.
Last February, the Alliance selected AREVA’s prismatic core, modular HTGR reactor as the reactor design concept to provide high temperature process steam for industrial applications and electricity production. AREVA’s design offers improved passive and inherent safety features along with unique high temperature performance capabilities. Some benefits include:
|•||Stabilized, long term fuel costs for energy intensive industries, enabling sustainable expansion of American industrial manufacturing|
|•||Reduced greenhouse gases through large scale displacement of premium fossil fuels in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications|
|•||Reduced reliance on imported oil and gas supplies as industry fuels|
The DOE awarded $1 million to the Alliance for a 50/50 cost shared contract (plus follow-on options) to continue business and economic analysis of HTGR technologies. The Alliance is assessing the technology’s ability to create highly efficient electric power generation, cogeneration of thermal energy and electricity, and steam generation. It is designed for use at petrochemical and other processing facilities, and oil sands recovery operations.
AREVA will continue to work with the NGNP Industry Alliance on next steps for bringing the HTGR design to market. Membership in the Alliance is an important part of our commitment to assuring a sustained supply of safe, clean, around-the-clock power.
AREVA’s support of the NGNP Industry Alliance, as an active member and as supplier of advanced HTGR technology, is key to eventual deployment of this Generation IV reactor design, which is an important part of AREVA's commitment to the use of safe and carbon-free energy around the world.
