Transnuclear Receives Patent for NUHOWS RadWaste Canister

Press Release

February 20, 2013

COLUMBIA, Md., Feb. 20, 2013 – Transnuclear, Inc., an AREVA company, is pleased to announce that their innovative NUclear Horizontal Waste Storage (NUHOWS) RadWaste Canister (RWC) has been patented by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the unique solution it provides for storage of irradiated non-fuel materials for nuclear power plants.

Transnuclear’s NUHOWS RWCs are unique in that they house non-fuel materials such as control rod blades, local power range monitors, jet pumps and other materials while requiring minimal processing, thus lowering project costs for customers. In addition, the Transnuclear RWC is much larger than the universal irradiated hardware disposal liner, allowing for a greater number of blades, pumps and monitors to be stored in a single container.

The design is flexible in that it allows for the partial loading and on-site storage of the RWC, and the option to refill when additional radwaste becomes available for storage.

“The Transnuclear RadWaste Canister helps our customers safely and cost-effectively store their irradiated materials,” said Michael McMahon, President and CEO of Transnuclear, Inc. “We are pleased that our technology has been issued a U.S. patent, and look forward to leveraging our global expertise to support our U.S. customers in meeting all of their safe used fuel and material storage needs.”

The Transnuclear RWC can store waste from both Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) sites and Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) sites.

While on-site, the NUHOWS RWCs can be stored in Transnuclear’s NUHOMS® Horizontal Storage Modules, the same modules used to safely store used fuel. Because these RWCs can be transferred using the same equipment that is already compatible with a site’s used fuel storage system, Transnuclear customers have an additional cost incentive to use the Transnuclear NUHOWS RWC.

The Transnuclear RWC is already licensed for transportation with the Transnuclear rail cask (MP197HB) for any future off-site shipping needs.
