AREVA Receives NRC Approval for Its New ARCADIA® Software
March 13, 2013
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 13, 2013 – The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved AREVA’s new ARCADIA® core simulator system for core performance analysis and licensing in pressurized water reactor plants in the U.S. This approval greatly enhances AREVA’s portfolio of licensing tools for the U.S. commercial nuclear power generation market.
AREVA’s global experience and engineering competencies have been developed into the ARCADIA® code system, the most advanced industrial code system worldwide. One of the system’s key features is the capability to model reactor core behavior in unprecedented detail and with reduced uncertainties, allowing for an accurate assessment of safety and operating margins. With access to the largest worldwide validation database, ARCADIA® can be applied to an extended application range encompassing all standard types of fuel assemblies and all pressurized water reactor cores.
“NRC approval of the ARCADIA code system is a testament to the achievement of our global organization, drawing on the experience of hundreds of operating cycles and delivering a solution that marks a cornerstone in advancing safety for the operation of pressurized water reactors," said Markus Birkhofer, Fuel Business Unit Executive Vice President.
“In the U.S., this is a significant milestone that enables AREVA to offer an advanced set of codes and methods giving our engineers the ability to perform advanced analyses compared to our competitors,” said Ron Land, senior vice president of AREVA’s Fuel Business Unit in North America.
The ARCADIA® code system enables straightforward application of integrated methods for core design and safety analysis. Several of these methods have already been used for internal safety studies for AREVA EPR™ reactor projects. Using the ARCADIA® system for the AREVA EPR™ demonstrates a gain in terms of electricity production by reactors. AREVA plans to deploy the ARCADIA® code system globally, providing opportunities for international business growth and export.
