AREVA Successfully Demonstrates Through-Air Radar with 212-foot Extended Range
March 15, 2013
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 15, 2013 – AREVA announces the successful demonstration of the new VEGAPULS® 62 through-air radar to monitor the water levels in a spent fuel pool under adverse conditions.
“AREVA is focused on new innovations that meet our customers’ needs for simple and cost-effective, yet reliable and field-proven spent fuel pool monitoring solutions,” said George Beam, Senior Vice President of Installed Base at AREVA Inc. “We thank those fleets that have recognized and will use our through-air radar in the future, and we welcome others to join the growing users group.”
Through intelligent signal evaluation, VEGAPULS® enables higher measuring certainty and increased reliability, even in the most critical applications. AREVA successfully demonstrated the system’s capability to handle saturated steam, dense smoke, boiling water and debris with no effect on the measurement accuracy during a simulated field test in February.
Representatives from two-thirds of the U.S. nuclear market have attended demonstrations of AREVA’s VEGAPULS® solution, and the response has been quite positive. “The product demonstration thoroughly validated that the through-air radar is a solid technology for spent fuel pool level measurement in response to the Fukushima event,” said one participant. The demo illustrated how well the product works under postulated event conditions. In addition, the new waveguide length extends the radar’s range, allowing the sensor electronics to be located up to 212 feet away from the spent fuel pool and in an accessible, mild environment, which makes it an excellent fit for any site’s application.
The VEGAPULS® solution is part of AREVA’s Safety Alliance offering, a comprehensive range of products and services that help utilities demonstrate and upgrade the safety of their nuclear plant fleets.
