AREVA Celebrates Earth Day, Launches Art Contest

Press Release

April 30, 2013

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 30, 2013 — In celebration of Earth Day, AREVA employees across the United States engaged their colleagues, communities and children in a variety of educational and community activities throughout the month of April.

“As a forward looking energy company, AREVA’s clean air energy solutions reflect our commitment to meet customer needs while at the same time innovating to reduce our impact on the planet,” said Mike Rencheck, CEO, AREVA Inc. “Earth Day presents a great opportunity to reinforce and celebrate AREVA’s environmental stewardship at work, at home and in our local communities.”

Continuing the celebration of last week’s Earth Day, AREVA will be launching a contest in Virginia to repurpose a former company sign into a piece of engineered artwork. Working with universities and artists, this project aims to blend the arts with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), resulting in a visual representation of our clean air energy future. The final piece will be unveiled close to Earth Day 2014.

AREVA employees also worked to engage the broader community around the company’s sites. Employees from AREVA’s Federal Way, Wash., location worked with kids in their garden at a local elementary school. Transnuclear, Inc. employees in Columbia, Md., organized an electronics recycling event, and employees in Richland, Wash., Philadelphia and Marlborough, Mass., participated in community cleanups. Charlotte, N.C., employees hosted an art contest for the Moorehead STEM Academy around the theme “What Does Clean Energy Look Like?”

Employees at more than 13 sites across the United States and Canada also organized a variety of events to celebrate Earth Day, including green potlucks, green trivia and personal sustainability pledges. More than 300 employees and their children across the U.S. and Canada participated in a company poster contest; the winning entries will be integrated into the new standard AREVA screensaver. In addition, the company’s Lynchburg, Va., sites held green living expos where employees learned about natural cleaning products and other ways to reduce their personal carbon footprints. The events also highlighted sustainable gardening and agriculture.
