In Greensboro, Hagan Tours Columbiana Hi Tech

Press Release

  • CHT to forge partnership with community college system that mirrors Hagan’s AMERICA Works Act

GREENSBORO, N.C., May 13, 2013 – U.S. Senator Kay Hagan today toured the Greensboro facility of Columbiana Hi Tech (CHT) and joined Don Olson, President and COO of CHT, to announce a partnership between Columbiana and the North Carolina Community College system. The goal of this partnership is to ensure that workers have the skills and expertise they need to manufacture the high-quality products for which Columbiana is known.

“I believe these types of partnerships – between employers and community colleges – are exactly what we need to get our economy back on track and get people back to work,” said Hagan. “Employers should not be struggling to fill jobs when families are still struggling to make ends meet. That’s why I introduced the AMERICA Works Act, a commonsense jobs bill that encourages industry and community colleges across the nation to make connections that will made sure job training programs are making workers job ready.”

Columbiana Hi Tech is a leading manufacturer serving the needs of nuclear utilities and related industries. They are the world’s largest manufacturer of front end radioactive packaging for the commercial nuclear fuel market.

In March, Hagan introduced the bipartisan AMERICA Works Act, a commonsense jobs bill to help address the skills gap and ensure that workers are being trained for the jobs that are available now. The legislation, which is supported by the National Association of Manufacturers and many other trade associations, employers and educators, establishes a national industry-recognized credentialing system that ties the needs of American businesses to the curriculums of community colleges and job-training centers - matching the skills training with the needs of employers.

“CHT is proud to be a growing business in the Greensboro community, and, through AREVA and Transnuclear Inc., a key part of the robust energy hub in the Carolinas,” said Don Olson, President & COO of CHT. “We value and appreciate the support we've received from Senator Hagan and look forward to expanding our work with the community college system to help build the CHT workforce with highly skilled technicians whose welding services are required to meet the highest levels of safety and quality for our nuclear customers.”

Last week, Columbiana announced plans for expanding its facility and adding new technology to address a growing need for safe used fuel management materials. Since the beginning of this year Columbiana has added 14 employees to its Greensboro facility and will have more than 100 employees by midyear, a 25 percent increase in full time staff. The facility expansion will include another 900 square-feet of office space and construction of a 1,050 square-foot training center at its main facility in Greensboro.

“I am thrilled that Columbiana is expanding its facilities and adding jobs at their facility here in Greensboro,” added Hagan. “I am working every single day to create a better business climate so companies like Columbiana can grow jobs and boost our local economies.”
