AREVA TN Pool to Pad Team Performance Sets the Bar High for the Industry

The AREVA TN pool to pad team recently completed an eight-canister Dry Cask Loading at a northeastern U.S. plant site. Eight NUHOMS® 32PTH canisters were loaded with remarkably low dose rates and no change orders (see chart below).
Canisters were loaded like clockwork at a rate of one per week, meeting the projected schedule. The on-site team consisted of 23 people supported by various AREVA TN resources in Columbia, Maryland and Aiken, South Carolina. The team accumulated more than 22,000 safe on-site work hours with zero (0) Safety or Near Miss issues. The project effectively controlled personnel exposures consistent with ALARA practices, and continually drove performance improvement.
Several initiatives powered the high level of performance during this project. The AREVA TN Pool to Pad Playbook was used to perform the site walk down, and all station high risk activities were identified, allowing management to be aware of the potential impact of an activity and preclude any adverse effects on the station. AREVA TN provided headsets at the DFS pad, complementing the two-way radios provided by the plant, and ensuring safe, clear and efficient communications. Consistent pre-job briefings and two-minute drills prior to all major lifts ensured the team was well-prepared for unanticipated occurrences if they arose. Weekly post-job briefs were used to identify Best Practices and Areas for Improvement, and involved all members of the team, thus driving continuous improvement throughout the campaign. No corrective action reports (CARs) were initiated as a result of the post-campaign brief.

One key to our success is the training program at NUHOMS® University that brings in utilities, AREVA partners and other team members to participate in a five-week training course.
Each element of the used fuel storage process is practiced in real time with life-size models. Classroom training is enhanced by this live training, which includes the insertion of potential trouble areas that could arise, thus students graduate from the “U” well-prepared to handle their loading. This maximizes Human Performance Excellence in the used fuel loading and transfer arena.
As a result, our PWR and BWR teams have consistent error-free, low dose loadings---setting the bar high for the industry!
