RICHLAND, Wash., Aug. 23, 2013 – AREVA and PPL Susquehanna commemorated more than 20 years of fuel quality in both units at the Susquehanna nuclear power plant located in northeastern Pennsylvania on Aug. 21, 2013 at the AREVA Fuel Manufacturing Facility in Richland, Wash.

Both Susquehanna units have operated without fuel rod defects since 1992.

“This milestone was achieved thanks to the collaboration between PPL Susquehanna with their design and operations philosophy and AREVA’s design and manufacturing operations with a joint commitment to operational excellence,” said Paul Myers, senior vice president of the Front End Business Group in North America. “At AREVA we believe that a strong technical solution is strengthened by understanding our customer’s needs, and we are proud to work together with PPL to ensure fuel reliability and the safe operation of the Susquehanna nuclear power plant.”

In the past 20 years, AREVA has made advancements in the fuel design for boiling water reactors (BWRs) which contributed to this significant achievement. The Susquehanna plant has used AREVA BWR fuel for more than 40 reactor-years. The fuel used in both units at the Susquehanna plant over the past 20 years was comprised more than 500,000 fuel rods. Those rods represented 1.3 million successful welds with no defects and contained more than 219 million fuel pellets, which is equivalent to nearly 33 billion gallons of oil.
