CHARLOTTE, N.C., August 29, 2013 – Military veterans, students and local Girl Scouts from the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area attended AREVA’s STEM outreach event at Morgan State University yesterday. AREVA CEO Mike Rencheck participated in the event to highlight the company’s commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, and to raise awareness of the career opportunities available in STEM fields. He was joined by STEMconnector CEO Edie Fraser, Morgan State University President David Wilson and IndyCar driver Simona De Silvestro.
“Our clean energy present and future depend on a robust, talented pool of highly skilled engineers, technicians and craft labor,” said Mike Rencheck, CEO of AREVA. “It’s important to spark the interest of students and raise awareness among military veterans of career opportunities in the energy industry and the importance of nuclear energy’s contribution to clean electricity.”
All attendees completed a hands-on “marshmallow challenge” engineering competition, which encouraged collaboration, innovation and creative thinking. Local students and members of the Girl Scouts of Greater Maryland also participated in additional activities that focused on the anatomy of an atom, and energy and engineering.
Military veterans attended a special panel discussion on careers in clean energy, which featured representatives from AREVA and its Transnuclear business unit, as well as Exelon and PPL. They also had the opportunity to speak with AREVA talent recruiters and learn about job opportunities available in engineering, project management and outage services.
The No. 78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy IndyCar and driver Simona De Silvestro were also in attendance at the event. AREVA has partnered with De Silvestro’s team, KV Racing Technology, to sponsor the Nuclear Clean Air Energy national educational initiative, which aims to broaden awareness of safe, clean, affordable and reliable nuclear energy, and the attractive potential of STEM careers. The event was hosted by AREVA, which is the largest nuclear energy provider in the United States, and supported by the Nuclear Energy Institute, STEMconnector, Exelon and PPL.
