AREVA’s committed and highly experienced Fire Protection Group has provided engineering services to the nuclear power industry for more than 25 years, bringing experience and global capabilities to the majority of the U.S. nuclear power plant fleet.
AREVA’s Fire Protection Group has the expertise to support the nuclear fleet in resolving issues associated with all aspects of their license-based Fire Protection Program, whether they retain the prescriptive 10CFR 50 Appendix R, or transitioned to the 10CFR 50.48.c NFPA 805 performance-based programs. AREVA has supported plants with their deterministic safe shutdown analyses as well as the development of their programs for transition, implementation and maintenance of NFPA 805
performance-based programs. AREVA has also supported plants that have retained their prescriptive-based programs in the development and implementation of Fire Probabilistic Risk Assessment programs in accordance with Regulatory Guide 1.189.

AREVA has experience in the evaluation of external flooding hazard for both new and existing nuclear power plant structures, systems and components (SSCs).
AREVA’s experience includes in-depth knowledge of the regulatory framework, determination of flood parameters, the development and application of various flood models to assess potential impacts to SSCs, and qualification of the flood design basis for SSCs.
Most recently, AREVA has assisted utilities in their response to the Post-Fukushima Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 50.54 (f) (2012) Request for Information (RFI) regarding flooding hazard reevaluations at U.S. operating reactor sites. Calculations are performed to predict local intense precipitation, probable maximum precipitation, flooding on streams and rivers, dam breaches and failures, probable maximum hurricane, tsunami, storm surge, seiche, channel migration or diversion, ice-induced flooding, and a combined-effects flood. AREVA uses both deterministic and probabilistic methods to perform the reevaluations. Following submittal of the reevaluation, AREVA provides solutions for the Integrated Assessment for External Flooding for sites that exceed their existing flood design basis. AREVA stands ready to respond to your emerging flood hazard issues.

With more than 40 years of experience, we are knowledgeable in the application of fuel- and core-related NRC and ASME requirements. AREVA recently supported a customer in a complete revision of their GL 2008-01 program and associated procedures to meet the regulatory requirements regarding mitigation of gas voids in ECCS systems. AREVA also supported the customer’s disposition of existing voids providing timely and robust technical evaluations.
AREVA’s multi-discipline team consisting of expert thermal-hydraulic and structural analysts can perform complex water hammer, void transport and structural analyses in support of complete revision of the customer’s GL 2008-01 program. Based on in-depth understanding of the technical aspects and the regulatory position on gas voiding in ECCS systems, AREVA is able to develop an innovative and highly cost-effective approach that will help our customers perform quick operability determinations without needing to perform extensive computations or costly modifications. This innovative approach helps the customer meet all current regulatory obligations while giving them flexibility to reduce impact on plant and personnel.
Drawing on extensive experience in GL 2008-01 program implementation and varied plant modifications, AREVA can also recommend several enhancements to the ECCS piping system to allow for additional flexibility and operability. AREVA’s exclusive Nuclear Grade Air Trap (NGAT) solution can simplify inspection methodologies and frequencies reducing overall dose and cost associated with implementing GL 2008-01 programs.

Through a teaming agreement with ALDEN Research Laboratory, Inc., a world leader in hydraulic analysis, AREVA provides NRC-recommended Computational Fluid Dynamic Analysis to minimize debris loading on your screens. PCI’s SURE-FLOW™ Strainer’s head-loss performance has been tested for design basis flows, velocities and specific debris mix.

AREVA’s Human Factors Engineering (HFE) team is a global leader in designing human systems interface and control room modifications. Aging and obsolescence of electrical components, such as control switches, relays, breakers, solenoid valves, motor operated valves, air operated valves, EDG hoses, and electronic modules continues to become a major concern in the United States. To avoid costly down time, AREVA can work with your Procurement and System Engineering organization to identify critical-to-generation components that are no longer available and have no spares in stock.
Our engineers can identify the critical characteristics for the obsolete components and recommend suitable replacements from our Nuclear Parts Center as well as other suppliers. We also have the in-house capability to re-engineer electronic modules, if needed. Our Commercial Grade Dedication engineers can qualify the recommended replacement components, and our new Technical Solutions Center allows us to do our own qualification testing in-house, saving time and money while ensuring quality.
AREVA’s Regulatory Affairs organization provides licensing and compliance support to deliver a total solution to address Fukushima issues, cyber security, and operational challenges that require resolution of licensing or compliance issues with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

AREVA’s department of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) and Risk-Informed Engineering Applications professionals have extensive experience in PRA updates for Regulatory Guide 1.200 compliance, PRA model maintenance, containment analysis, external hazards including high winds and external flooding, digital I&C PRA, volunteer (Tech Spec) and regulatory-driven (SDP, maintenance rule) risk-informed applications, recent regulatory issues such as seismic PRAs, as well as new plant PRA applications.
Our best risk solutions quite often lead to plant improvements, and AREVA’s design teams are very experienced in cost-effective modifications. AREVA offers the best long-term, risk-informed solutions for our customers.
AREVA’s all-around knowledge, which includes the nuclear steam supply system and balance of plant, greatly supports risk-informed engineering and applications in a balanced manner. This synergy helps to ensure the best and most cost-effective, long-term solutions.
AREVA can perform seismic risk evaluations in support of Near Term Task Force (NTTF) Recommendation 2.1.
AREVA’s experience includes knowledge of the regulatory framework and ASME/ANS Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) standard, development of seismic fragilities, integration of the seismic PRA model into the existing internal events PRA model, and active participation in seismic risk evaluation industry meetings.
AREVA has developed a cost-effective, integrated and iterative approach for seismic risk evaluations to identify any additional analyses or modifications early and minimize the duration of the analysis. The AREVA seismic evaluation methodology meets the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.200, ASME/ANS PRA Standard, and the Seismic Evaluation Guidance (SPID) provided by EPRI (EPRI Report No. 1025287). AREVA’s U.S. Technical Center has one of the largest and most capable multi-axial seismic shake tables in North America. AREVA TN’s engineering and technical expertise lies in the structural, thermal, and nuclear analysis and drafting of the NUHOMS® system, one of many state-of-the-art products that we offer to ensure safe and error-free storage and transportation of used fuel and radioactive waste.
As our NUHOMS® product line continues to evolve, we plan to introduce our new EOS (Extended Optimized Storage) variant of the NUHOMS® in 2017, offering a higher capacity (89 BWR, 37 PWR) and we are developing more sophisticated storage modules that will deliver enhanced features and seismic capabilities. Further, AREVA’s engineers review all aspects of the Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) as it impacts the plant’s existing processes and procedures.

Neutron Activation Analysis
Metals in and around the reactor become activated due to neutron bombardment from the fuel.
As a manufacturer of fuel for a global market, AREVA maintains state-of-the-art computer codes to calculate the amount of radioactivity in these metal components. This Neutron Activation Analysis uses a combination of codes to accurately quantify and normalize radionuclide distributions to support many applications from power upgrades to reactor vessel internals characterization. Characterization of these reactor components retrieved during outages or stored in the Spent Fuel Pool may also be used to support transportation (49 CFR 173) or disposal (10 CFR 61).
As a leader in plant decommissioning, AREVA’s Neutron Activation Analysis capability supports a variety of tasks from site characterization to reactor internals characterization. Reactor internals characterization includes 10 CFR 61 classification to support segmentation and packaging as well as the optimization of GTCC storage on the site’s ISFSI. AREVA has accurately performed these analyses for operating and decommissioning plants for over 35 years.
