CHARLOTTE, N.C., August 14, 2014 – Columbiana Hi Tech (CHT), an AREVA Inc. subsidiary, has started construction on a new facility in Kernersville, N.C., that will significantly expand the company’s capacity to manufacture dry storage containers for used nuclear fuel. This new facility will help CHT and AREVA's used fuel storage and transportation division, AREVA TN, to meet projected growth in the market over the next few years.

“CHT’s expanded fabrication capacity will allow AREVA TN to better serve U.S. utilities with safe, high-quality, domestically fabricated dry-shielded canisters,” said Mike McMahon, senior vice president of AREVA TN Americas. “As the U.S. leader for used fuel management, AREVA TN provides customers with on-time delivery and guarantees economically competitive solutions.”

With four fabrication bays and a crane capacity of 40 tons, the building is specifically designed for the optimized manufacturing of AREVA TN’s NUHOMS® dry-shielded canisters and will be able to produce at least 48 units per year.

Approximately 75 employees will be based at the 100,000-square-foot building which will serve as CHT’s primary manufacturing location and new headquarters. Combined with CHT’s current facility in Greensboro, N.C., this new installation will double the company’s footprint in North Carolina. Samet Corporation, a large development and construction company located in the Greensboro area, is building the new facility.

“We are proud to be part of the AREVA TN team for used nuclear fuel storage solutions,” said Don Olson, president and chief operating officer of CHT. “With this strategic plant expansion, we are contributing to the local economy and supporting a strong industrial nuclear capability in North Carolina.”
