Jefferson Forest Boys Soccer Team “Kicks for a Cause” with AREVA to Fight Local Childhood Hunger
March 30, 2015
LYNCHBURG, Va., March 30, 2015 – For the third year in a row, AREVA Inc. and the Jefferson Forest (JF) High School boys’ varsity soccer team are working together to raise funds for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s BackPack Program. AREVA will donate $50 for every goal the JF team scores during home games this season to assist the more than 52,000 children in the Blue Ridge region struggling with hunger.
“At AREVA, forward-looking energy means more than providing products and services to ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants,” said Gary Mignogna, president and CEO of AREVA Inc. “It means actively engaging with the next generation of community leaders, and helping kids thrive by making sure their basic needs are met. We are proud to again support the JF team and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to help fill these needs.”
AREVA sponsors the BackPack Program as part of its community outreach in Lynchburg, Va. The company’s contributions committee representing a cross-section of the company’s Lynchburg employees commended the JF team on their creative approach to community service, raising awareness, and fundraising.
“We’re excited to work with AREVA again this year,” said Thomas Cavanaugh, a team captain on the JF varsity soccer team. “Between our determination and AREVA’s support, we hope to deliver the maximum donation of $2,000 like we did last year.”
The Back Pack program began in 2006 and has grown to feed thousands of children across six counties and four cities within the food bank’s service area. Elementary schools in which 50 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch participate in the program.
“’Kicks for a Cause’ is a wonderful way to facilitate young people helping young people,” said Michael McKee, CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. “These athletes will not only play to win for their team, but they will also play to win for the thousands of children who are fed through the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank after-school feeding program each year.”
