AREVA TN Canister Now Available for High Burnup Nuclear Fuel Storage and Transport

Press Release

July 08, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 8, 2015 – AREVA TN, a division of AREVA, recently expanded its portfolio of used nuclear fuel storage and transport solutions with the new NUHOMS® 32PTH2 dry shielded canister (DSC) and the MP197HB transport cask.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) final rule regarding approved spent fuel storage casks (Amendment 3 to the Certificate of Compliance 1029) went into effect on Feb. 23, 2015, paving the way for AREVA TN’s NUHOMS® 32PTH2 system introduction to the U.S. market. This system features a newly developed transportable canister designed to safely accommodate up to 32 intact – or 16 damaged – pressurized water used fuel assemblies, including high burnup fuel assemblies. Once loaded with used fuel, this canister can be stored in the company’s Standardized NUHOMS® Advanced Horizontal Storage Module, which features the industry's highest level of seismic resistance.

AREVA TN also recently introduced the MP197HB transport cask to the U.S. market. This is the first and only transport cask that is licensed in the country to transport high burnup used fuel for offsite storage.

"The ability for utilities to efficiently transport used fuel offsite is key to its future management in America,” said Greg Vesey, senior vice president of AREVA TN Americas. “With this expanded range of used fuel solutions, we are ready to support our customers with safe and secure options today, paving the way for long-term storage success in the United States.”

AREVA is a global leader in solutions for the transportation and storage of used nuclear fuel. In the United States, more than 40 percent of utilities use AREVA’s advanced NUHOMS® horizontal storage technology to safely store used nuclear fuel. AREVA TN is the market leader in the United States with more than 900 canisters stored at more than 30 sites.
