AREVA Pledges Matching Donation to Vector Space Expansion Campaign
December 15, 2015
LYNCHBURG, Va., December 15, 2015 – AREVA Inc. recently pledged matching funds to help Vector Space, an educational nonprofit organization based in Lynchburg, Va., kick off its fundraising campaign for program and facility expansions. Vector Space offers a community-based makerspace facility where people of all ages interested in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) can explore and undertake hands-on projects.
“Our employees are driven by a commitment to lifelong learning and a culture of excellence,” said Gary Mignogna, president and CEO of AREVA Inc. “Supporting local educational initiatives like Vector Space enables us to share that culture and strengthen technical skills related to science, technology, engineering and math in our communities. This is the future of our workforce and a driving economic force for our community.”
“We are grateful for AREVA’s support and recognition of Vector Space as a valuable regional resource for collaboration and creativity among learners of all ages and backgrounds,” said Elise Spontarelli, executive director of Vector Space. “This donation will help us open a space of our own and expand our programming in early 2016.”
AREVA joins other local employers supporting Vector Space and benefiting from the STEAM programs. After Vector Space raises $10,000 in community pledges, AREVA will make a matching donation.
Vector Space hosts educational events for youth attending area schools and programs, including the Jubilee Family Development Center and Randolph College’s Science Saturdays. For example, students at E.C. Glass High School worked with Vector Space to design and to build a camera-mounted drone. In a similar program, adult participants designed and launched a high-altitude balloon capsule equipped with sensors and cameras to record its 90,000-foot rise to near space.
AREVA supports nonprofit organizations in the more than 30 communities across the country where it operates. In 2014, AREVA and its employees contributed more than 3,000 volunteer hours and more than $1.8 million to charitable organizations and educational institutions.
