RICHLAND, Wash., March 1, 2016 – AREVA Inc. recently presented a $5,000 donation to Delta High School – the region’s public science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) school – to help fund scholarships for students pursuing a college education in a STEM-related field. Ron Land, AREVA’s Richland site manager, presented the donation during National Engineers Week.

Career development programs are a significant part of Delta High School’s successful curriculum, earning the school several awards and recognition.

“Delta High School is honored to offer this scholarship opportunity to our students,” said principal Dr. Jenny Rodriquez. “The elements of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are woven into every subject at Delta, and we greatly appreciate AREVA providing monetary support to our students pursuing STEM at the collegiate level.”

During an event with students at the high school, Land and other AREVA engineers spoke to students about the importance of engineering, the demand for engineers in the workforce, how to prepare for a career in engineering and the benefits of STEM education.

Students also participated in a Seismic Shake-up Challenge, during which they designed and built structures using coffee stirrers and modeling clay that could withstand simulated earthquakes.

“Our people have a passion for supporting STEM education and sustaining and advancing nuclear energy,” said Land. “Our partnership with Delta High School plays an important role as we work to prepare the next generation of our industry’s workforce.”

Ron Land, AREVA Inc. Richland Site Manager, is joined by Delta High School Associate Student Body officers – Adriana McKinney, Sanjay Phillips, Faith Follett, Jaxon Dean and Olivia Coleman – for a check presentation on Feb. 26, 2016.

Cameron Kelly and Isabel Stohel construct a tower to see if it can withstand an earthquake as part of the Seismic Shake-up Challenge on Feb. 26, 2016, at Delta High School.
