Transnuclear Inc. (TN) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AREVA North America that offers total system solutions for used fuel/radioactive waste management, and comprehensive transportation services for the entire nuclear fuel cycle. TN is the market leader in both sectors because of cutting-edge engineering capabilities.
No other Dry Storage Cask System is as versatile as NUHOMS®, Transnuclear’s flagship product. The system is robust, practical and simple to operate. It uses advanced technology — an engineered Dry Shielded Canister and Horizontal Storage Module — but supports a low life cycle cost. Currently, NUHOMS® offers the highest capacity, burnup, heat load, thermal and seismic options available in the U.S. today.
Available for at reactor storage of both BWR and PWR used fuel, NUHOMS® offers the nuclear industry several key advantages:
All NUHOMS® DSCs are designed for offsite shipping using Transnuclear’s cutting-edge MP197HB transportation package. For special applications, Transnuclear can also provide metal storage casks.
Transnuclear offers an integrated logistics model that combines transportation know-how with packaging design expertise in a single offering that provides a one-stop, holistic solution for commercial and government customers in North America. Services include:
Designed for the U.S. EPR™ reactor, Transnuclear’s NUSTOR™ used fuel racks are adaptable for use in all reactor types, offering customers flexible fuel management options and next generation technology.
NUSTOR™ racks utilize Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) poison material for criticality control. Our MMCs do not require extrusion, use a more corrosion resistant matrix alloy, and reduce dissimilar metal contact. As a result, TN has eliminated the major causes of pitting corrosion in other MMCs and consequently eliminated the need to anodize.
Design and licensing are underway and the first NUSTOR™ rack will be installed in a U.S. reactor pool in 2013.
Innovative technology. Practical execution. From the workhorse NUHOMS™ storage system to advanced engineered products, Transnuclear’s designers have licensed a range of casks that today meet all the used fuel storage needs of US utility and government customers.
Cutting edge engineering products include the AREVA Automated Welding System, NUSTOR™ rack, MP197HB, and NUHOMS® Dry Shielded Canisters and Horizontal Storage Modules that offer the highest capacity, burnup, heat load, thermal and seismic options available.
For many utilities, used fuel loading is not a routine activity. With the Transnuclear pool-to-pad team, utilities receive a proven, comprehensive used fuel management solution that minimizes cost and risk. Services include fuel loading, handling and inspection; procedures and training; crew and equipment mobilization; and ISFSI design, construction and startup.
Today, U.S. reactor operators face limited options for disposal of irradiated reactor components. The NUHOWS system provides an ideal on-site interim storage solution for Class B and C irradiated reactor hardware components such as control rod blades, jet pumps and fuel channels.
NUHOWS is designed intentionally to mirror TN’s proven NUHOMS® Dry Shielded Canister storage system. The Rad Waste Container, like the DSC, is stored in a Horizontal Storage Module and transportable via TN’s MP197HB shipping package. In addition, the RWC minimizes size reduction requirements and under water component segmentation, and allows for multiple loadings. One RWC accommodates up to a decade of irradiated components.
AREVA helps its customers to fully benefit from the energy potential of their used fuel by recycling it. This option also enables them to condition their final waste and to reduce the volume and radiotoxicity.
