In January 2017, Sam Shakir was appointed president and chief executive officer of Orano USA, headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Sam Shakir is the president and chief executive officer of Orano USA (formerly AREVA Nuclear Materials), the U.S. subsidiary of the global company Orano.

Shakir oversees all Orano businesses in the U.S. including: MCE for sales of uranium fuel, conversion and enrichment services; D&D for decommissioning and decontamination of nuclear facilities through its joint venture with NorthStar, named Accelerated Decommissioning Partners; TN America offering the full breadth of used nuclear fuel management, including storage, transportation and facility management; Orano Med for the development of medical isotopes for targeted immunotherapy for fighting cancer; and Federal Services offering the full complement of engineering and technology to solve some of the more complex nuclear material processing, conditioning and packaging for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Throughout his career, Shakir has actively developed businesses, deployed new technologies, arranged financing, and led project and engineering organizations in various nuclear and renewable energy sectors. With more than 25 years of operational and commercial business management experience, Shakir has held several senior executive management positions, including leadership roles within the former AREVA Group.

Prior to his current role, Shakir served as the Group Executive Vice President of AREVA Renewables where he led a global businesses to deploy Solar CSP, offshore wind, and biomass projects in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America. Prior to that, he served as the CEO of AREVA Enrichment Services, where he led the development of a project to license and design a uranium enrichment facility in the U.S. Previous positions with AREVA also include VP Strategy for the Back End Business Group, VP Business Development, and Product Engineering Manager for Transnuclear Inc. (now TN Americas). He also served as Project Manager with ABB at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.

Shakir earned an MBA from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Engineering from Concordia University.
