TN Americas Signs Contract with U.S. Utility for Multisite Used Nuclear Fuel Loading Services

Press Release

April 20, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 20, 2017 – TN Americas, AREVA Nuclear Materials’ nuclear logistics division, signed a multisite contract for transferring used nuclear reactor fuel from cooling pools to onsite dry storage. Over the next three years, TN Americas will complete this work at five nuclear energy facilities.

The used nuclear fuel assemblies will be removed from the reactors’ fuel pools and sealed in NUHOMS® canisters. The canisters will then be transferred onsite to NUHOMS® horizontal dry storage modules made of reinforced concrete with walls up to five feet thick.

“The key differentiators for TN are our experienced teams and their project successes achieving industry-leading low dose exposure, on-schedule completion, and cost-efficiency,” said Greg Vesey, president, TN Americas. “Bringing us onboard for the used fuel transfers allows our customers to focus on doing what they do best—generating clean electricity—while tapping our expertise for these specialized storage tasks.”

To ensure the used nuclear fuel transfers at the reactor sites are performed safely and efficiently, all TN Americas fuel loading team members will have completed hands-on training with full-scale transfer equipment, technology, and procedures at TN Americas’ NUHOMS® University in Aiken, S.C.

At the NUHOMS University, team members practice aligning the transporter with a full-scale mockup NUHOMS module entry. Once properly positioned, the interior canister can be slid into the module.
