AREVA in the U.S.: Our Story

Significant Events in Our History

AREVA Inc. was created in 2003 to establish AREVA’s presence and brand in the U.S. and Canada. In 2006, all first-tier AREVA subsidiaries in North America legally changed their names to reflect the AREVA brand:

AREVA in North America includes AREVA group subsidiaries AREVA NP Inc., AREVA NC Inc., AREVA T&D Inc., CANBERRA Inc., and AREVA Resources Canada, and all of their second-tier subsidiaries. Through these business units and subsidiaries, AREVA participates in every step of the nuclear power production and energy cycle including electrical transmission and distribution.

Collectively, AREVA subsidiaries have a history of more than 50 years in the U.S.

1958

Framatome SA (the "Franco-Américaine de Constructions Atomiques") is founded by the Schneider, Empain, Merlin Gerin and Westinghouse groups. 
Framatome SA is headquartered in Paris, France and provides inspection, maintenance, repair, upgrade and refueling services to French nuclear utilities.

1976

Founding of COGEMA SA, which acquires the majority of the French Atomic Energy Commission’s production division operations: mining, uranium enrichment, and used fuel reprocessing. 

1981

COGEMA completes study of best structure for the United States, and its engineering subsidiary SGN establishes a liaison office in Washington, D.C.

1982

COGEMA acquires Pathfinder Mines Corporation.

French Atomic Energy Commission and COGEMA U.S. activities are consolidated under COGEMA, Inc.

1987

COGEMA establishes Numatec, Inc. to pursue market share in the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle.

1989

B&W Nuclear Service Company

Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Power Division joins with Framatome SA to form the B&W Nuclear Service Company

 

 

 

1995

In December 1995, B&W Nuclear Technologies changes its name to Framatome Technologies Group, Inc.

1997

COGEMA, Inc. subsidiary Transnuclear, Inc. acquires Packaging Technology, Inc., specialist in the design and fabrication of storage and transporation packages for radioactive materials.

1998

Transnuclear, Inc. acquires NUHOMS® assets.  NUHOMS® is a nuclear used-fuel dry storage system.

2001

Founding of AREVA, an industrial group combining the operations of COGEMA, Framatome, and FCI.  AREVA is the only group in the world to have expertise and operate in every sector of nuclear power industry, including the nuclear fuel cycle, reactors, instrumentation, nuclear measurement systems, and engineering.

Framatome ANP, Inc. acquires all shares of the former Siemens Power Corporation in Richland, Washington.

COGEMA, Inc. acquires CANBERRA Inc., and the latter company's Packard BioScience activity is sold to Perkin Elmer.

2002

Framatome ANP, Inc. purchases Duke Engineering & Services in the United States, a nuclear engineering and services company.

2004

 AREVA signs the closing agreement for the final acquisition of Alstom’s transmission and distribution (T&D) activities.  Through the integration of T&D, the group strengthens its strategic position in the energy sector and expands its range of services.

The group is now able to provide to customers an integrated offering including nuclear energy products and service, as well as electricity tranmission and distribution solutions.

2005

AREVA and Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) announce the formation of UniStar Nuclear, a  joint enterprise providing the business framework through which a standardized fleet of U.S. EPR Generation III+ reactors can be developed and deployed.

2006

Framatome ANP, Inc. and COGEMA, Inc. assume new identities, changing their respective names to AREVA NP Inc. and AREVA NC Inc. The identity change of these American companies is part of the group’s plan to build the AREVA brand worldwide.

2007

AREVA Federal Services, LLC is created to consolidate AREVA’s government activities into one entity, optimizing our relationship with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

AREVA Federal Services, LLC demonstrates AREVA's commitment to the DOE, the nuclear industry and the nuclear renaissance.

2008

AREVA and Duke Energy announce the formation of ADAGE™, an innovative joint venture dedicated to the development of green biopower energysolutions for U.S. electricity customers.

AREVA and Northrop Grumman join forces to create world-class facilities in Newport News to manufacture heavy components for the American nuclear energy industry.

AREVA announces both the future location of its planned enrichment plant in Bonneville County, Idaho and the creation of a new subsidiary called AREVA Enrichment Services, LLC. The plant is named Eagle Rock Enrichment Facility to make an important connection with the history of Idaho Falls, whose early name was Eagle Rock.
