Launching Renewables in the United States
AREVA created the global Renewable Energies activity in 2006 to offer an alternative solution for generating energy without greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear energy and renewable energies complement one another in a CO2-free energy mix.
The Renewable Energies activity: • Comprises offshore wind power, bioenergies and hydrogen energy capabiities, • Employs a workforce of 850 people worldwide, • Has operating units in North America (including the United States), Latin America (Brazil), Europe (France, Germany), and Asia (India, China).
Our Missions: • Expand the group's portfolio of CO2-free energy generation technologies; • Participate in the industrial development of wind power and bioenergies to become a significant player in these markets; • Extend AREVA's presence within high-potential geographical areas and within decentralized markets; • Consolidate AREVA's sustainable development commitments.

In the United States: the creation of ADAGE |
 |
|
|
In September 2008, AREVA and Duke Energy announced the formation of ADAGE™, an innovative joint venture dedicated to designing, building and operating bioenergy power plants - considered to be carbon neutral by federal and state agencies - for U.S. electricity customers.
ADAGE facilitates the development of biopower plants that will use wood waste to produce electricity. According to the agreement, AREVA will design and build biomass power plants. Duke Energy Generation Services (DEGS), a commercial power business unit of Duke Energy that owns and develops renewable energy, will manage operations. For each project, ADAGE also will negotiate power purchase agreements and fuel contracts, and secure suitable sites. Hence, ADAGE will provide customers a fully integrated solution.

ADAGE is the first biopower ("biomass to electricity") partnership in the United States between major energy companies. Biopower has great potential. Federal and state environmental agencies consider biopower carbon neutral, a significan advantage over traditional power facilities. The impact of biopower facilities on our economy is just as important; these facilities will create hundreds of new, green collar jobs. In addition, the utilization of biomass as an abundant domestic resource reduces America's reliance on imported fuels.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates the total installed capacity of wood biomass power generation is 6,000 megawatts. EIA and several energy consulting firms predict that this figure may double over the next 10 years.
ADAGE is headquartered in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. To find out more, visit http://www.adagebiopower.com/.
